Happy Holidays

Due to the Holidays and craziness that ensues with travel and family, we have opted to not have a Decemeber meeting of PDXCritique. Please stay tuned for information on our plans for January and beyond.

meeting notes: scones are yummy and where were you?

first up, what did we do? there were 5 of us there tonight. not enough reminders? I know that we scheduled for an off week, but what can we do better next time?

back to the business at hand, we got together tonight, if I were to give this one a name I’d vote for the “where the hell is everyone meeting” or more aptly the “*OMG* john these scones are delicious” meeting (seriously, you all missed out).

next: who’s who?

john (jazzpdx.org) is looking to start a new more expansive venture pdxmusicsource.com, and was looking for some answers for how best to get users from the home page to the info that they want. The conversation mostly revolved around what the user really wanted. There was some discussion about the over all design of the site. I don’t know how much we can divulge as the sites still in beta, but lets just say that it could be a very interesting way to help you connect with unknown parts of the music world here in portland.

from there we went and shifted gears slightly and justin talk about tofino’s sign up process (more info at tofinoauctions.com). the main problem is how to best streamline the process of teaching the user about the service while making it easy and exciting for someone to sign up. not the easiest thing to tackle and given the wide target demographic it makes things even more complex. our discussion mostly focused around what the user really wants and what they should expect, how best to deliver that while staying out of there way. there were also a few small side tracks on various solutions to specific form issues and some better ways to solve them.

i had a great time tonight, thanks again to john and justin for presenting.

In Praise of Good Design

All my life I have despised wearing socks. All that extra fabric that bunched around my pinky toe getting twisted up in my shoes and served no purpose other than to annoy me. My solution has always been to wear shoes that do not require socks. In recent years, as life would have it, I have been resigned to wearing custom orthotics and primarily super expensive cushioned athletic shoes and thus, socks.

Keen Footwear, a Portland based company, to the rescue. One day while pursuing a store for no real reason, I came across the most amazing pair of socks. They were designed for the left and right foot. I thought, well that makes sense, we have shoes designed for the right and left foot why has it taken so long for socks to catch up?

Not only do these socks resolve the issue of extra fabric gathering at the pinky toe, they are made of recycled and renewable materials. The packaging makes me smile a big sustainable grin as the socks simply hang off a piece of cardboard that is 100% recyclable. This is truly great design, a product that works exactly as it should. Each sock is labeled with a little R and L to let you know which foot they go on. The toes and ankle are reinforced and they come in different thickness and heights for your varying needs. Now, if you lose one in the dryer, you can’t simply match them up with any old random sock out of the drawer, but at least you will know if you lost the left or right one.
